NAZIR TANBOULI DRAWING PERFORMANCE BRITISH MUSEUM 2015

Nazir Tanbouli presented two durational performances on the theme of "Drawing and Movement."

Naz opened the Shubbak Festival with an all day performance for Hafla on the Square at the Chelsea Theatre. performing along side some of London’s finest Arab musicians, including the Yaz Fentazi Trio, described by Time Out as ‘a wicked fusion of chaabi, gnawa and jazz’. http://www.shubbak.co.uk/hafla-on-the-square/ Chelsea Theatre, 7 World’s End Place, King’s Road, London SW10 0DR

On Sunday 15th July. Naz made a major performance of drawing at the Great Court of the British Museum. Naz created three new 12m long works inspired by the collection of the British Museum and his recent research trip to Egypt. http://www.shubbak.co.uk/radouan-mriziga-nazir-tanbouli/ Great Court, The British Museum Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG

Following tours of Egypt and the Middle East for the British Council over 2013-2014, Naz has spent spring 2015 in Egypt studying drawing, ritual and movement as part of an Arts Council of England supported residency. He has been working in the desert oasis of Siwa, in Cairo and in the port city of Alexandria, developing new contemporary works based on traditional Egyptian arts and materials.
Naz is best known in London for his massive 2012 project THE KING'S LAND where he took over the whole of the condemned Kingsland housing estate (off Kingsland Rd in Hackney), and covered it with murals. (see www.nazirtanbouli.com) The work was featured extensively in London 2012 coverage and in the film Taking Over the King’s Land (2014) which premiered at Sheffield Docfest 2014. NAZIR TANBOULI: BLACK BOOKS

18 - 30 June 2014 at Westminster Reference Library, 35 St Martin's St, London WC2H 7HP
(off Leicester Square just behind the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery)

[see http://www.drawing.nazirtanbouli.com]

Nazir Tanbouli presents Black Books an exhibition of artist books, together with a selection of his meditative Zen drawings, and live performance. He will show a selection from The Black Books, an ongoing project of dramatic ink drawings in books that he has been producing since May 2010. There are 49 books in the series to date, all hand drawn. They form a diary, an interplay between the artist's conscious and unconscious mind, reflecting the artist's technical, aesthetic and intellectual concerns about art and life.
“I am pleased to present Black Books in the historic surrounds of Westminster Reference Library, London's biggest collection of over 40,000 books on theatre, art and design.”

NIGHT OF THE BLACK MOON

shoreditch fringe

Gillian McIver and Studio75 present a vision of a magical world made of light, fantastical moving images playing over the walls and bricked up windows of a run down soon-to-be-demolished East London housing estate.

Housing estates often feature in film, especially British films, as a byword for social exclusion, poverty and dysfunctionally. NIGHT OF THE BLACK MOON turns this trope on its head and sets the film inside a run down housing estate, with the moving images projected directly onto the exterior walls. And instead of being all about “social problems” NIGHT OF THE BLACK MOON is all about fantasy, thrill, memory and desire.

NIGHT OF THE BLACK MOON features a show of intricate and stunning moving image work by a selection of artists:

PROSPERO'S LIBRARY | 29.04 - 01.05 2011

mciver tanbouli

“Prospero's Library” began as a project inspired by both the character of Prospero in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and the film Prospero's Books by Peter Greenaway. Imagining Prospero's magical “library of everything” was the starting point for an exhibition that is ever-expanding and transforming, as different books and items are added to it, and it magically manifests itself in different places on the globe.

"rip it up, mash it up, stick it up!" | 14-18 2011

An exhibition of contemporary collage, and a screening of short film and video art. Creating art out of existing materials: ripping it up, reassembling and remaking can be political, and it can be poetic. "rip it up, mash it up, stick it up!" explores many aspects of the artworks that come about as a result of the process of re-assemblage, collaging, appropriation and remixing.

THE COCKFIGHT:

COMERFORD VS. TANBOULI | 17-20.03. 2011

cockfight In ancient Athens, the painter Zeuxis and his contemporary Parrhasius staged a contest to determine which of the two was the greater artist. When Zeuxis unveiled his painting of grapes, they appeared so luscious and inviting that birds flew down from the sky to peck at them. Zeuxis then asked Parrhasius to pull aside the curtain from his painting, only for Parrhasius to reveal the curtain itself was a painting. Zeuxis was forced to concede defeat. Zeuxis is rumoured to have said: 'I have deceived the birds, but Parrhasius has deceived Zeuxis.'

cTHE DRAUGHTSMAN
18 - 20 .02 2011

An exhibition of contemporary graphic drawing by four artists:Tom G. Adriani, Jonathan Comerford, Glenn Ibbitson and myself, Nazir Tanbouli.

For the four of us, graphic drawing is the very foundation of all of our artwork, I personally believe in graphic drawing as the great medium of communication with the general public, it's a very profound form of expression that deals with both spoken and unspoken gestures and emotions, Graphic drawing is often looked down at by many "establishments" who have got great interest in maintaining many elitist notions in relation to art and culture

But I believe that Graphic drawing is the bread and butter of creative communication. Therefore, this exhibition is an introduction for a series of events which will include these artists and many others in the near future.
